Frequently Asked Questions

A dental checkup every 6 months is recommended for most people. This allows early detection of cavities, gum disease, and other oral health issues. People with gum disease, high cavity risk, or orthodontic appliances may need more frequent visits. Regular professional cleaning helps prevent tartar buildup and gum problems.
Modern root canal treatment is performed under local anesthesia and is generally no more uncomfortable than getting a filling. The procedure saves a badly infected tooth from extraction. Any post-procedure soreness is usually mild and managed with over-the-counter pain medication. Delaying treatment often causes more pain than the procedure itself.
Not all wisdom teeth need removal. They should be removed if they are impacted, causing pain, damaging adjacent teeth, causing recurrent infection, or contributing to decay or cyst formation. Your dentist will evaluate with an X-ray (OPG) and recommend removal only if necessary.
Bleeding gums are most commonly caused by gingivitis (gum inflammation) due to plaque buildup. This is usually reversible with proper brushing, flossing, and professional cleaning. Persistent bleeding despite good oral hygiene could indicate more serious gum disease (periodontitis) or other health conditions and should be evaluated by a dentist.
Professional teeth whitening performed by a dentist is generally safe and does not damage enamel when done correctly. Over-the-counter whitening products should be used with caution. Some temporary sensitivity is normal after whitening. People with dental restorations, severe sensitivity, or gum disease should consult their dentist before whitening.
Very early-stage cavities (white spot lesions) can sometimes be reversed with fluoride treatment, improved hygiene, and dietary changes. However, once a cavity has formed a visible hole in the tooth, it cannot heal on its own and needs to be filled by a dentist. Delaying treatment allows the cavity to grow larger and more expensive to treat.
For a knocked-out tooth, place it back in the socket or in milk and seek a dentist within 30 minutes. For severe toothache, rinse with warm salt water and take a pain reliever. For a broken tooth, save any pieces and cover sharp edges with dental wax or sugarless gum. Visit an emergency dental clinic or hospital ER as soon as possible.
The ideal age for an orthodontic evaluation is around 7 years, when a mix of baby and permanent teeth are present. Treatment may not start immediately but early evaluation allows the orthodontist to plan the best timing. Some interceptive treatments can begin early to guide jaw growth, while full braces typically start between ages 11-14.
Orthodontic treatment typically takes 12-24 months depending on the complexity of the case. Simple alignment issues may take less time, while complex bite corrections can take longer. Your orthodontist will provide an estimated timeline after a thorough evaluation. Clear aligners may be an alternative option for suitable cases.
